With all the news going on about North Korea lately, seeing this rare and recent Facebook video footage, (shot by Foreign Editor, YLE's Asian correspondent, Mika Mäkeläinen) of the streets of the country's capital city, gives us a glimpse into the daily life, the roads and city landscape there.

I was so intrigued by the video that I was constantly stopping and starting, to take snapshot images of the things I found interesting. For example, I was curious as to what that huge monument in the middle was - so I had to look it up.

It's called the 'Tower of Immortality'! This monument of monuments is there to reassure and remind the people that The Great Leader Comrade Kim Il-sung and the Dear Leader Comrade Kim Jong-il (subsequently added of course) will always be with them.

The monument is said to be some 92 metres tall (over 300'), and stretches across a six lane highway by incorporating two arches to allow traffic to pass through. Depicted at the base is the national flower of North Korea, the magnolia.

And check out this bicycle path. Even though the streets are so empty, I noticed they have a really safe bicycle path for cyclists. Much safer than ours anyways!!

Overall, I was surprised to see how 'normal' everything looked and was even more surprised that the correspondent was able to film all this. According to Vox, he stated: “I shot it openly through the windshield, and nobody told me not to film.”

Truly fascinating stuff! Enjoy the video.

No slow moving traffic here!...
